Jeffrey S. Siker, Homosexuality and Religion: An Encyclopedia, Greenwood Publishing Group, 2006

Few issues today cause more public - and private - debate than the interaction of homosexuality and religion. From the question of gay marriage to the place of gays and lesbians within faith communities, religious leaders and lay members must deal with these issues for now and for years to come. What is the historical position of the major denominations? How are people of faith balancing their beliefs? This encyclopedia provides an overview of the various attitudes and responses that religions have had to the presence of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered persons within their communities.

Stefan Hinterholzer, Homosexuality as an Issue of Religion and Politics in the USA, GRIN Verlag, 2007, 24 pagine

The USA is a country that has a deeply-rooted religious tradition on the one hand and that separates religion and state like almost no other country on the other hand. However, the border between this religious consciousness in private and this strong secularism in public life often becomes blurry.
There are certain issues like school prayer, sex education or abortion that are of an extreme importance for religious people. These make up a majority of the American society and a significant percentage of potential voters. Consequently, many politicians (including the current president George W. Bush) pay attention, react or even give in to this pressure in order to maintain a solid basis of voters that secures their political position. An important issue in religion and politics in the USA is homosexuality and the related issue of same-sex marriage. Homosexuality has been being not tolerated and banned by most religious groups for a long time, but in our liberal society today many churches seem to develop a certain degree of tolerance towards homosexuals and to change their perspective on homosexuality. This makes the whole issue controversial since the perspectives in society also change. The major question in politics is whether homosexual couples should obtain the same rights (or at least some rights) as heterosexual couples through marriage or civil union or not. The importance of this issue also became clear for George W. Bush when he started the campaign for his re-election. The aim of this topic is to prepare an introduction to the vast issue of the problematic relationship between religion and homosexuality and an overview of the positions of the American Christian churches towards homosexuality, to show the power of the religious groups (and the public opinion), to take a look at George W. Bush in his re-election campaign and to highlight the current legislation in the USA.

Gay Religion di Scott Thumma, Edward R. Gray, Rowman Altamira, 2004, 454 pagine

Conflicts regarding homosexuality and gay rights threaten to break apart denominations, if not North American society. These heated theological and political debates also obscure the fact that many gays and lesbians are actively religious individuals. Gay Religion is the first book to give a straightforward presentation of the spiritual lives, practices, and expressions of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered people. Drawing from a wide range of religious traditions, new and established scholars explore the range of gay religious expression in denominations, sects, and other recognized religious institutions. The contributors ask what these religious innovations mean to the continually evolving religious environment of North America. With helpful introductions and an appendix providing profiles of organizations involved, Gay Religion is a unique and compelling resource for anyone interested in homosexuality and religion. Book jacket.

Sons of the Church: The Witnessing of Gay Catholic Men di Thomas B. Stevenson
Pubblicato da Haworth Press, 2006, 103 pagine

Sons of the Church spotlights testimonials from over 30 gay Catholic men to answer the question, "How can you be gay and Catholic?" Thomas B. Stevenson, who received degrees from the University of Notre Dame and the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, explores this question using various interviews to thoroughly analyse the many dimensions of being gay and Catholic while providing a powerful and convincing criticism of Church teaching on homosexuality. This thoughtful, surprisingly reverent book is the answer for those gay readers who long for a religious connection, as well as for Catholic readers and those in pastoral positions who want and need to hear the stories of gay people firsthand. Each chapter is arranged thematically, beginning with experiences of being homosexual and Catholic during childhood and youth. Subsequent chapters delve into the ways these men each finally accepted themselves and integrated their sexuality, related to others who did or did not understand, dealt with homosexual promiscuity, found intimate relationships, became a part of a community and ultimately came to terms with the Catholic Church and their faith. Throughout, these `witnesses' explain how their faith in God guides them through the various experiences and issues they face. The positive aspects of Catholic Christianity are respectfully explored at the same time as the present Church teaching on homosexuality is challenged.

Acts of Faith, Acts of Love: Gay Catholic Autobiographies as Sacred Texts di Dugan McGinley, Continuum International Publishing Group, 2004, 246 pagine

It is widely admitted that Roman Catholic teaching on homosexuality is schizophrenic: morally rigorous but pastorally progressive. Dominican theologian Gareth Moore says the problem stems from the church's focus on "acts" rather than "relationships." Since Vatican II and the Stonewall Riot, there has been an outpouring of lesbian and gay Catholic autobiographies--some book-length, others in the form of essays or even embedded in novels. These autobiographical "acts," argues McGinley, can provide the subjectivity--thick description that is sorely lacking in the church's understanding of gay people. In Acts of Faith, Acts of Love, McGinley explores the overlap of religious and sexual identities in the stories gay men write about themselves. The autobiographical writings of 40 gay Catholics (or former Catholics) are analyzed.

The National Catholic Educational Association has published and supported some studies into the attitudes of Catholic school teachers and principals on a variety of topics, including homosexuality. In a survey of Catholic elementary school teachers, Kushner and Helbling (1995) found that 52.2% believed that a teacher in a Catholic elementary school should not be terminated if it is discovered that he or she is homosexual, while 34.6% indicated agreement that homosexuals should not be allowed to teach in Catholic schools.

Research on lesbian and gay populations within African American communities has,
not surprisingly, focused on many of the same issues that have confronted the sometimes
opposed and sometimes intertwined social movements for Black and gay liberation.
Our review of this literature examines these issues following the same general
historical trajectory within which they arose.
