As Christians we cannot remain silent in the face of the events in Camaiore
Reflection of the Waldensian Evangelical Church of Lucca
The Waldensian Evangelical Church of Lucca, with the sisters and brothers with whom we have been organizing, for many years, the torchlight procession and vigil every year on May 17th to overcome homobitransphobia, joins the voices of dismay at the crime committed in Pieve di Camaiore.
A father took the life of his son and wife, not knowing how to fulfill the fundamental mandate of every parent: to love, welcome and accompany the lives of his sons and daughters in their uniqueness.
Behind what many newspapers call "madness" lies an act of patriarchal violence that denies people's freedom and self-determination.
As a church we are convinced that every similar act of violence (be it homophobic/transphobic or feminicide) requires a reflection on the social, religious and political reality in which we live, that is, a critical analysis of ourselves.
This reflection arises from the gospel of God's grace and explains its social and political consequences, regardless of the interpretative grid we use to read what happened.
Just two months have passed since the torchlight procession and vigil against homolesbobitransphobia held in the city and in the Waldensian Church of Lucca.
On that occasion we reflected on the biblical passage from the prophet Isaiah: "Do not be afraid, for I have redeemed you, I have called you by name" (Isaiah 43.1). This promise from God applies to all his sons and daughters, regardless of who they love or how they live.
The violent and lying words of political and religious leaders create the context in which, as believers and the church, we are called to bear witness to the gospel today.
In reacting to such words and the actions that too often derive from them we feel obliged to take a stand, in the name of Christ, against everything that "suffocates the truth in injustice" (Rom 1,18)
