Mary, in becoming our Mother, is associated with the cross of Christ with those who love Jesus, and with those who, being around the cross, stands next to her.

From the Gospel according to John 19: 25-27

At that time, his mother's sister, Mary Mother of Clèopa and Mary of Màgdala were at the cross of Jesus, his mother's sister.

Jesus then, seeing the mother and next to her the disciple he loved, said to the mother: "Woman, here is your son!". Then he said to the disciple: "Here is your mother!" And from that hour the disciple welcomed him with him.
