“I have come to bring fire to the earth” (Luke 12:49-53)
Biblical reflections by Mauro Leonardi*, priest and writer
We often do not understand what the peace and meekness that Jesus speaks to us about and that Jesus is are. It is not a submissive attitude but an expectation full of hope and desire and love. Jesus is not afraid to face conflict and even divide if necessary.
From the Gospel according to Luke 12:49-53
At that time, Jesus said to his disciples: «I have come to bring fire to the earth; and how I wish it were already on! There is a baptism I must receive; and how anxious I am until it is accomplished! Do you think I have come to bring peace to the earth? No, I tell you, but the division. From now on in a house of five people they will divide three against two and two against three; father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law
