A violence that no longer makes news. 2025 report on homotransphobia in Italy
From may 2024 to april 2025, the chronicles Project of Ordinary Homotransphobia de La Tenda di Gionata, coordinated by Massimo Battaglio on homophobia.org, recorded 105 episodes of homotransphobia in Italy, which involved 154 victims.
An alarming number, which invites us to stop and reflect on a violence that often passes in silence, as if it were now "normal" or inevitable. Massimo Battaglio, coordinator of the project, offers us a detailed analysis of what happened in this year, to help us better understand the scope and severity of these documents.
Analysis of the phenomenon
The general trend of the homophobic phenomenon seems to be falling. After a period of growth that sees a peak in the 2018-2019 period in which 248 victims had been detected, the cases that came to light in the following years have constantly decreased and with them the number of victims. However, the figure of the period in question remains largely above the average of the last twelve years.
However, if we disintegrate the data by type by separating cases of physical violence, cases of suicide or attempted suicide and different cases (unjust dismissal, stalking, defamation, removal from home or public places etc.), we discover that the recorded drop does not correspond to a decrease in violence at all.
The number of victims of physical violence in fact continues to be constant by wandering over the ninety units. More: in the last year the number of suicides increases strongly. What is less in light are the different episodes, which have not implicated physical aggressions to the people involved.
This makes you suspect that the homophobic phenomenon is not at all falling but that the difficulty of intercepting the victims has increased. And this is explained with the very scarce attention that politics and the media-now widely enslaved to it-reserve for the homo-bi-transessual question.
From this also descends a certain resignation in the LGBT+ people - which we can also see in the sinking of protests and political proposals on the subject - resignation that also translates into a lower propensity to report. We are actually very far from wearing homophobia. Indeed, it seems that we have returned to tolerate it to the point of not considering it as a phenomenon as a news.
Types of violence
Now we go even more in particular and distinguish the acts of physical violence in three categories: those against individual people, those against couples or groups of people, those who led to death or who have been accomplished with the explicit intent to kill.
Comparing the most recent data with those of the average of the last 12 years, we see that the percentage of the first two categories out of the total has definitely increased: for individuals to individuals we have 29% against an average 27%; Group ones exceed 29% against an average of 22%. Only the murders are falling: from 2% to 1%.
Homophobia is therefore increasingly far from its stereotyped representation that would like to derubricate it to "crime of opinion", unless they mean as opinions also those expressed in the most uncivilized ways, that is, through the hands. And the objection of those who claim that the claims of the LGBT+ people are increasingly unacceptable are increasingly affected by "verbal violence" or "psychological".
Faced with the real massacres reported in the list, it would be advisable to avoid a respectful silence instead of resorting to similar rhetoricals.
Subdivision by sexual identity
Premise: we must apologize for the language used. We know that the "male", "female", "trans" nomenclature can be offensive and that it does not exhaust the spectrum of gender identities, which should distinguish at least the people who define themselves to be fluid or non -binary. However, when we have this research, these problems had not yet entered common knowledge. Only in very recent times, some victims have qualified as "non binary".
Likewise, it was impossible to distinguish between homosexual, bisexual and more people since no one has ever said to be the victim of an act of "bifia" or other. On the contrary, everyone expressed the certainty of having been violated or discriminated against because they are perceived as homosexuals. And it is precisely the perception by the homophobic, that triggers violence, so much so that, sometimes, people were pounded or defamed people who were not at all homosexuals but had a behavior that, in the eyes of the homophobic, aroused "suspicions".
Instead, it should be noted that the female component of the victims, already scarce in the average, is even more scarce in the 2024-2025 vintage, which induces to think that homophobic hatred does not go so much against a generic non-etherosexuality of the victims but against their alleged lack of masculinity. The enormous percentage of trans victims M> F - which constantly stands on 11% while the incidence of trans people on the LGBT+ population exceeds just 1% - confirms the hypothesis for which homophobia is only a phenomenon of male chauvinism to yet another power: the person who detaches himself from the Machist stereotype is more punished.
Territorial distribution
By comparing the territorial distribution by region throughout the period in question (2013-2025) with that of the Last year (2024-2025) it is confirmed that, logically, the regions that have recorded the largest Number Of Victims (Lazio, Campania, lombardy, piedmont, sicily) are those that revolve around Large Cities (Rome, Milan, Naples, turin), with a curious exception, in the last Year, for the veneto, victims is higher than that of piedmont and Slightly lower than that of lombardy despite The fact that there are no cities of size comparable In turin nor in Milan. "Cultural" Differences?
If we note that, overall, all the regions of Italy have been affected by the emergence of homophobic phenomena, we can only be surprised at the lack of data relating to the last vintage that come from the Aosta Valley, from Friuli Venezia Giulia, by Abruzzo, Molise and Basilicata. Which makes us suspect that the recorded data are increasingly underestimated than the real phenomenon and that the "unspoken" increases.
If we relate the number of victims with the number of inhabitants of the individual regions, we note that the average incidence of the average varies between 3 and 4 victims per 100,000 inhabitants, with a slight decline downwards in the last year. However, there are two interesting phenomena: on the one hand, the case of Lombardy, where the very high number of inhabitants cannot decrease the incidence below 2, and on the other the cases of Lazio and Campania, who are unable to lose the primacy (this year exceeded only from Trentino).
This phenomenon is probably explained with the high rate of the homo-brat population in the large metropolises of Milan, Rome and Naples, where LGBT+ people tend to concentrate and often move for evident reasons, not least that of escaping from highly homo-negative contexts.
The episodes and victims
This is thelist of episodes of Omotransphobia that we recorded since last May 2024 to the whole April 2025. They are 105 and involved 154 victims.
