Amazed and frightened they believed they saw a ghost (Luke 24: 35-48)
Biblical reflections by Mauro Leonardi*, priest and writer
Jesus comes to bring peace, a strange peace that creates upheaval, fear, fear of having a ghost in front of them. Because the peace of the Lord is not tranquility amorphous and without dynamism: it means believing in a lively Jesus who moves us from our certainties and unloads our mental codes.
From the Gospel according to Luke 24: 35-48
At that time, returning from Emmaus, the two disciples reported what had happened along the way and as Jesus had recognized in breaking the bread. While they spoke of these things, Jesus himself appeared in the midst of them and said: "Peace to you!". Amazed and frightened they believed they saw a ghost. But he said, "Why are you troubled, and why do doubts arise in your heart? Look at my hands and my feet: it's me! Tap me and look at me; A ghost has no meat and bones as you see that I have ». Saying this, he showed their hands and feet. But since for the great joy they still did not believe and were amazed, he said: "Do you have something here to eat here?". They offered him a portion of roasted fish; He took it and ate it in front of them. Then he said: "These are the words that I told you when I was still with you: all the things written on me in the law of Moses, in the prophets and in the psalms must be fulfilled." Then he opened their mind to the intelligence of the Scriptures and said: "This is how the Christ will be written: the Christ will have to suffer and resurrect from the dead on the third day and in his name they will be preached to all people the conversion and forgiveness of the sins, starting with Jerusalem. Of this you are witnesses.
