"I am the light of the world ..." (John 8: 12-20)
Biblical reflections by Mauro Leonardi*, priest and writer
The truth of the essence of Jesus lies in his relationship with the Father. As a man is always followed by his shadow so the presence of the Father is reflected in the Son. And when the son speaks he does it to testify to his father. And the Father assures the truth of what the Son testifies.
From the Gospel according to John 8: 12-20
Again Jesus spoke to them: «I am the light of the world; Those who follow me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life ». Then the Pharisees told him: «You give the testimony of yourself; Your testimony is not true ». Jesus replied: «Even if I testify to myself, my testimony is true, because I know where I come from and where I go. Instead, you don't know where I come from or where I go. You judge according to the meat; I don't judge anyone. And even if I judge, my judgment is true, because I am not alone, but I and the father who sent me. In your law it is written that the testimony of two people is true: orbene, it is I who testify to myself, but also the father, who sent me, gives me testimony ». They told him then: "Where is your father?" Jesus replied: «You know neither me nor the Father; If you knew me, you would also know my Father ». These words Jesus pronounced them in the place of the treasure while teaching in the temple. And nobody stopped him, because his hour had not yet come.
