"What you want to do, do it soon" (John 13: 21-33.36-38)
Biblical reflections by Mauro Leonardi*, priest and writer
The hour of betrayal travels all the disciples, so much so that they themselves do not know who the Lord is talking about. We are only capable of an imperfect love. The Lord wants us to give him our limited heart so that he can transform us from inside, giving us his life.
From the Gospel according to John 13: 21-33.36-38
At that time, [while he was a canteen with his disciples,] Jesus was deeply troubled and declared: "In truth, in truth I say to you: one of you will betray me".
The disciples looked at each other, not knowing well of those who spoke. Now one of the disciples, what Jesus loved, was at the table alongside Jesus. Simon Pietro made him nod to inquire who was what he was talking about. And he, bending over the chest of Jesus, said to him: "Lord, who is he?" Jesus replied: "He is the one for whom I will hit the bite and give it to him." And, dipped the Boccone, took it and gave it to Judas, son of Simone Iscariòta. Then, after Boccone, Satan entered him.
So Jesus said to him: "What you want to do, do it soon." None of the diners understood why he told him this; In fact, some thought that, since Judas kept the case, Jesus had told him: "Buy what we need for the party", or that it should give something to the poor. He, taken the bite, immediately left. And it was night.
When it was released, Jesus said: «Now the Son of man has been glorified, and God has been glorified in him. If God has been glorified in him, God will also glorify him for his part and will glorify him immediately. Children, for a short time they are with you; You will look for me but, as I said to the Jews, now I say it to you too: where I go, you cannot come ».
Simon Pietro said to him: "Lord, where are you going?" Jesus replied: «Where I go, you cannot follow me for now; You will follow me later ». Pietro said, "Lord, why can't I follow you now? I will give my life for you! ». Jesus replied: «Will you give your life for me? In truth, in truth I tell you: it will not sing the rooster, before you don't deny me three times ".
