"Simone, Giovanni's son, do you love me?" (Giovanni 21: 15-19)
Biblical reflections by Mauro Leonardi*, priest and writer
Jesus meets the fears of Peter as well as Mary, as a mother, meets our fears of children in faith.
From the Gospel according to John 21: 15-19
At that time, [when they manifested themselves to the disciples and they had eaten, Jesus said to Simon Peter: "Simone, son of John, do you love me more about them?". He replied: "Of course, Lord, you know I love you." He said to him, "Pasci my lambs."
He told him again, for the second time: "Simone, son of John, do you love me?" He replied: "Of course, Lord, you know I love you." He said to him, "grazes my sheep."
He said to him for the third time: "Simone, son of Giovanni, do you love me?" Pietro was saddened that for the third time he asked him "Do you love me?", And he said to him: "Lord, you know everything; You know that I love you ». Jesus replied: «It grazed my sheep. In truth, in truth I tell you: when you were younger you dressed yourself and you went where you wanted; But when you are old you will tend to your hands, and another will dress you and take you where you don't want ».
This said to indicate with which death he would glorified God. And, having said that, he added: "Follow me."
